1 glass of wine with a plate of cold cuts or cheese for 2 people, a real French snack!
In the mid-1930s, the painter Giorgio de Chirico, father of metaphysical painting, wrote in his diary, Memorie della mia vita, that the Victoria Palace Hotel was the “best, most comfortable, most friendly, most welcoming, most distinguished, cleanest, most restful hotel in the capital.”
PRETTY SWEET, RIGHT? Especially since almost a century later, the 4* hotel with 92 rooms and suites in the 6th arrondissement, inaugurated in 1913 and recently revamped, is doing its utmost to remain as faithful as possible to the Italian artist’s description. How? By rewriting history with comfortable modern details: quiet rooms and suites that open onto the interior patio or rue Blaise Desgoffe (a 19th-century Parisian painter, for the record), multi-service touchscreen tablets, and a strong commitment to eco-responsibility (Grown Alchemist® welcome products, zero single-use plastic, a selection of organic products). And everything without losing an ounce of its time-earned charm. The marble columns on the first floor have been preserved and are now flirting with a retro Art Deco inspired decor (a flourish of mirrors, paintings and antique objects, velvet seats, an abundance of brass, a cabinet of curiosities at the entrance…).
A FEW MINUTES WALK FROM MONTPARNASSE STATION, the Bon Marché and the Luxembourg Gardens, this hotel bears the Left Bank spirit well. Floating in the air is this deeply Parisian, intangible, mythical thing, between chic and bohemian that once nourished artists and intellectuals from the interwar period. This golden age charmed the writer and poet James Joyce, illustrious guest of the Victoria Palace Hotel from 1923 to 1924. The Irishman even referred to the establishment under the initials VPH in his novel Finnegan’s Wake. Others after him, the last Queen of Italy, Marie-José of Belgium, astronaut Neil Armstrong and the soccer player Pelé have also enjoyed the legend of Paris here. Now it’s up to you to write what comes next.
